The perfect lips for a red hot V-Day

With Valentine’s Day on the way, the world around us is slowly turning every shade of red and pink — including our makeup. And while stores like Ulta and Sephora offer us a rainbow sea of lip products, finding the perfect shade can be overwhelming.

From bright cherries to muted berries, we’ve gone down the line and selected a few of the perfect shades of reds for you based on skin tone.

Light: Cherry

Finding the right hue for a fair skin can go several ways as those with fair skin have different undertones. Some people have pinker skin, some have more yellow skin.

For those with a pink undertone (as pictured above), look for more of a blue-based cherry red. The red in the cherry will pop against the cooler undertone while the blue will help make teeth look whiter and brighter. For those with a yellow undertone, try a richer cherry shade — one with more of a purple base. This will complement the warmer tone of your skin.

Our picks: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Dragon Girl” ($26); Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in “Moulin Rouge” ($20)

Medium: Berry

Medium, honey tone skin looks great when paired with berry shades. Go for a muted berry (like we did), or go dramatic with a bold, bright berry that’ll definitely make your lips the focal point of your look.

Our picks: e.l.f. Luscious Liquid Lipstick in “Cherry Tarte” ($1); Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in “Budoir” ($28)

Pro Tip: Working with reds is tricky business. Clean up around the lips with your concealer and a stiff brush.

Olive: Red-Orange

Those with olive skin tones can have a ton of fun when it comes to color — no matter the shade, it will always look beautiful. Throw caution to the wind and make your skin pop against a red-orange. If you’re a little more subdued, find one that it more sheer (like the one pictured above).

Our picks: MAC Lipstick in “My Inner Frame” ($17); Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in “Heftiest Hibiscus” ($17)

Dark: Classic Red

Girls with darker complexions have really hit the jackpot when it comes to the color department. They can wear any color and still look amazing! However, a classic red can still be the best beauty statement.

Look for blue-based reds that will brighten and appear to whiten your smile. Glosses with gold flecks will also complement any warm undertones.

Our picks: Gucci Lip Lacquer in “Iconic Red” ($32); Rimmel London Provocalip 16hr Kissproof Lip Colour in “Kiss Me You Fool” ($6.99)
