It’s summer and Starbucks has launched a new line of daring summer sunset drinks like nothing else on their menu,. As a Starbucks fanatic I had to go try one… or all three.
People were comparing this new addition, the Granitas – which are only available after 3 p.m. – to a frappuccino, and I went in with those expectations only to find out it was nothing like a frapp. The only similarity being the ice.
These new Starbucks drinks are certainly refreshing, but they are not as creamy as a frapp.
A granita is a semi-frozen Italian dessert featuring sugar, ice and flavorings, so these drinks are more fruity and watery. I tried all three and here are the results:
Caramel Espresso Granita
Price*: $3.95 to $4.25 Calories**: 160
Similar to an iced caramel macchiato, this drink was lightly sweetened with two shots of espresso over shaved ice and topped with a caramel drizzle and a splash of milk. As a coffee lover, this was great! Usually I don’t like iced coffee as much as hot, but this version was a game changer. It is the perfect baby of an iced coffee and a caramel Frappuccino.
Strawberry Lemon Limeade Granita
Price: $3.45 to $3.75 Calories: 170
Much like a lemonade slushy, this drink was sweet and tangy. It includes housemade limeade topped with strawberry slices over lemonade flavored shaved ice. I was not a huge fan of this one, but if you like lemonade then this is the drink for you!
Youthberry White Tea Granita
Price: $3.45 to $3.75 Calories: 140
Although I love coffee, this drink was the winner between all three. Teavana’s Youthberry White Tea (a blend of tropical pineapple, fruity acai and hibiscus) with a hint of lemonade over shaved ice was perfect! It was light refreshing and tasted like summer. Yum! I highly recommend this drink for the perfect summer afternoon pick-me-up.
I would highly recommend you to try these drinks and find your favorite! Starbucks sunset drinks are the perfect pick me up for your summer afternoons.
