Leading the life you dream of tends to be easier said than done. And after surviving the crazy past 365 days we owe it to ourselves to take a step back and think of what it really means to be happy and healthy life.
Here are 17 resolutions that may help you remember to live the life you want in the new year:
1. Don’t fixate on changing physically
Typically, the new year is a time when the number of gym memberships amplify and people implement tons of resolutions that involve losing weight, getting ‘fit’, drinking tons of water and so on. It’s definitely important to do those things if you want to, especially being more hydrated, but a lot of people correlate New Year’s resolutions to sculpting their bodies, and that’s not all that it has to be about.
2. Let go of toxic relationships, even if it hurts
It’s painful to cut ties with that ex you still text late at night when you’re feeling nostalgic or to delete those old pictures of that friend you had a falling out with, but it’s vital to understand that torturing yourself with a painful relationship will only stop you from being happy in the future. If that person wanted to be in your life, or if they were meant to be, they would be.
3. Stop believing you have to be responsible all the time
Let loose. Have fun. Remember that 2016 was a stressful nightmare, so make 2017 so fun that you never have to look back and regret not giving yourself that night out.
4. Don’t procrastinate
Implement your resolutions. Make positive changes to your life immediately so that you can look up and enjoy all your hard work. Turn the assignment in, apply for that job, declare your major, then breathe a sigh of relief knowing that it’s all done with.
5. Create a new routine
Don’t stay stuck in unhealthy or unmotivating routines. Wake up earlier every morning and go for a run, eat a healthy breakfast, listen to music and begin your day full of energy and ready to take on 2017.
6. Save money for nothing in particular
It’s always a good idea to start a savings jar for nothing in particular. Start a savings jar even if it’s full of coins. Then, count the money saved on January 1st, 2018 and realize how much a little bit of saving adds up. You’ll know what to spend it on when the time is right.
7. Be open to new relationships
Reach out, be approachable. You could have more in common with someone than you know!
8. Drop one bad habit
Biting your nails, cursing, eating poorly, watching a little too much Netflix (*Cough, cough* We know you’re guilty.) Whatever it may be, ending a bad habit only has it’s perks.
9. Learn how to tune out negativity
Not allowing negative people and comments to affect you can be hard, especially if you’re sensitive or defensive. However, it’s easier to ignore a mean comment than struggle with the stress of feeling angry or sad. No one’s opinion of you matters except for your own.
10. Pick up a new hobby
From yoga to D.I.Y projects to gardening, there are countless hobbies out there. You can think of something.
11. Attend a local event
South Floridians are forever fearful of the Snowbird migration and tourists, but there may be something amazing out there that you’re missing. Be a tourist in your own town and discover what it has to offer.
12. Practice kindness
Pay it forward once in awhile in line at Starbucks, smile at a stranger, give a few dollars to someone in need, volunteer at an animal shelter – the list is endless. Those people will remember your act of kindness and so will Karma.
13. Read a challenging book (or several)
Challenge yourself in an intellectual way by reading a book that challenges you. Sometimes people find it easier to watch a movie and then read the book – that works, too! Books stimulate the imagination and increase vocabulary, so what’s not to like?
14. Make the first move
Kiss your crush, text them first, raise your voice, pitch your idea at work. Move first, or someone else might. Life is too short to hold back.
15. Live in the moment
It’s easy to stress about the future, but it’s easier to create a better future by finishing one successful day
16. Become the person you’ve always wanted to be
If you’ve always wanted to cut your hair, change your wardrobe or move away but you were too scared, understand that there’s no one stopping you. Fall in love with yourself and who you are. Be the you that you’ve always wanted to be.
17. Let go of the past
2016 sucked… Let’s try to redeem ourselves here.
Happy New Year!
